Portable Molecular Detection System of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

  • Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) for detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in gas.
  • Sophisticated electronic circuit detects resonance frequency shift caused by molecular absorption on the surface of QCM.
  • Utilizing the phase-locked loop (PLL) circuit to realize the mini-electronic measurement system

Applications:

  • Field-deployable QCM sensing system
  • Ultrasensitive chemical and biological substance detection.

Current Status:

  • Fully functional and standalone system in a briefcase with the carrier gas.
  • On-going research; work published
  • In collaboration with Dr. Isiah M. Warner (Chemistry, LSU).
